No British Cluster in the World's Top 10 Science and Tech Hotspots

Image
Standard youtube Licence Jane Lambert Cities have been motors of innovation and creativity throughout history,  Think of Periclean Athens, renaissance Florence, enlightenment Edinburgh and Silicon Valley.  Every year, the WIPO (the UN specialist agency for intellectual property) publishes a ranking of science and technology hotspots.   The list is compiled using the following methodology: "Inventors listed in patent applications under WIPO’s Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), spanning the years 2014 to 2018.  Authors listed in scientific publications in the Web of Science’s Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) and covering the same period.  The geocoding of inventor and author addresses and the use of density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (DBSCAN) algorithm to the geocoded inventor and author points." The above film shows the top 10 clusters for 2020.  From a British perspective, it is disappointing that there are no British clusters i...

"Pitch Perfect" - Funding Opportunities for Small and Medium Enterprises in Northwest Wales

Image
Jane Lambert In Resources for Inventors and other Startups in Northwest Wales   5 Feb 2019 NIPC Inventors Club I mentioned the Menai Science Park ("M-SParc") at Gaerwen in Anglesey and funding from the Development Bank of Wales . I did not, however, discuss other funding opportunities. Coinciding with the science park's first anniversary, M-SParc's Enterprise Hub will hold a pitching event known as "Pitch Perfect" in conjunction with Be the Spark  on St David's day between 17:00 and 19:30.  The organizers describe this event as "an evening of opportunities to pitch, chances to wow secret investors, the tools to vote on other pitches, and get feedback on your idea. It's not just for those who want to pitch; this will be an event you don't want to miss." According to the Eventbrite card, there will be three pitching opportunities: "FLASH PITCH - Two pots of funding up to £1,000 are available ON THE NIGHT for you...

Grantham Science Festival - there is a practical side to science

Image
A putative descendant of Sir Isaac Newton's apple tree Jane Lambert Baroness Thatcher  may be Grantham's most famous (or, depending on your politics infamous) daughter but Sir Isaac Newton  was indisputably its greatest son. Although Thatcher was by no means in the same league as Newton she was also a scientist. To celebrate its scientific heritage and in particular Newton's theory of gravitation Grantham is holding a science and arts festival known as Gravity Fields between the 24 and 28 Sept 2014. There will be all everything from rocket science for 2 to 5 year olds to building quantum computers with Professor Danny Segal of Imperial College in the Science Festival  and Douglas Hollick's Goldberg Variations  to Chasing the Eclipse   a new ballet by Chantry Dance Company , the only professional dance company in Lincolnshire. Now science, the arts and technology are the hallmarks of civilization but people wil...
