How to get into IP

Image
By Muhammad Karns - Judicial Office Twitter feed., CC BY-SA 4.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=78284579 Jane Lambert Earlier today I uploaded to Slideshare a presentation that I gave in February 2023 to members of the University of St Andrews Law Society  entitled A Career at the Bar of England and Wales .  I did so because I get a lot of enquiries on how to make a career in IP, as well as requests for work experience.  I had just come across a website called IP Careers   which lists careers advice , courses ,  jobs  and news .  Its only drawback is that it focuses on opportunities for patent and trade mark attorneys and openings at the Intellectual Property Office and European Patent Office but does not seem to have much for barristers or solicitors specializing in intellectual property. A website that does cover all the intellectual property professions is Careers in Ideas  which is managed by IP Inclusive , a great organizati...

Buying Intellectual Property from an Administrator

Red Court Shoe Author  Almighty1 Reproduction licensed by the author Source  Wikipedia Jane Lambert In Brantano - IP and Insolvency   23 June 2017 NIPC East Midlands, I noted that the administrators of Brantano Retail Ltd., which once ran a nationwide chain of shoe shops, had instructed Metis Partners to market the company's trade marks  and other intellectual property rights together with various legally protectable intellectual assets. Bids for those rights and assets have to be submitted by 12:00 on 30 June 2017 which does not leave much time for taking legal and other professional advice. Yet such advice will ve required if the bid is to be anything more than guesswork and further advice will be required on the negotiation and drawing up of any assignments and other agreements should a bid be accepted. NIPC Branding Launched

Image
Jane Lambert I have just launched a new blog called NIPC Branding  which covers trade marks and branding for startups and other small businesses. This blog has grown out of my public access practice. On the About page I explain that "difficulties have arisen that could have been avoided, or opportunities missed that could have been exploited, had the persons involved been made aware of the issue in advance." The purpose of this blog is discuss those issues and the countermeasures that can be taken to avoid the difficulties and steps that can be taken to exploit the opportunities. I also set out the services that I offer and how I can be instructed if anyone wants further advice or assistance. The very first post addresses the question of whether an entrepreneur can apply for a trade mark by him or herself or whether he or she should instruct a trade mark attorney (see  Can I apply for a Trade Mark by myself or must I instruct an Attorney?   31 Ma...

Animated Advice

Image
Embedded pursuant to the standard YouTube Licence Jane Lambert The Intellectual Property Office has recently uploaded a series of videos to its YouTube channel  which are very short but also very useful. The primer is IP Basics: What is Intellectual Property   and it is followed by films on copyrights. designs , patents and trade marks . Although they have been uploaded for some time they do not seem to have been watched by many people which is a pity because they are a lot better than the advice one can expect from most invention promotion companies or even some lawyers and, of course, they are free. The above video on  IP BASICS: Is Intellectual Property important to my business?   has received only 970 views since the 27 Nov 2015 and a large number of those will have have been made by me. I hope this article may attract more viewers for these films. Good though the IPO animations are there are some that have been produced by other organizations that I l...

IP Services from Barristers

Image
Jane Lambert Revised 16 May 2017 Some years ago, the Intellectual Property Office published a leaflet entitled "Choosing the Right IP Adviser". It contained a lot of useful information and I recommended it. However, there was one section that needed improvement and that was the one headed "IP Barristers" on page 6: "IP barristers are likewise part of a wider profession and IP barristers give specialist advice in IP matters and conduct cases in Courts. The more experienced members of this group are generally able to provide a certain amount of business advice around IP too, although it is not normally their speciality." Introduction to an IP Barrister will normally be through a solicitor, a patent or trade mark attorney or an accountant." That information was incomplete, out of date and in some respects misleading.   That leaflet has now been replaced by the web page  Seeking intellectual property advice . What is a Barrister?...
